Fountain Square Closures Enter Indianapolis Group Contracts

The Fountain Square drainage project has closed parts of Shelby Street since January 2026. Indianapolis group business for 2027 needs the closure calendar, the coach routes and the venue inventory.

Parts of Shelby Street in Fountain Square have been closed since January 2026. A group seller writing Indianapolis business for the 2027 season needs the closure dates in the file before the contract goes out. The Fountain Square Area Drainage Improvements Project carries the number SD-32-014 and a published cost of $14 million.

The closure calendar a contract can carry

The city's project slides list Phase one from the first quarter of 2026 through the fourth quarter of 2026 and Phase two from the first quarter of 2032 through the fourth quarter of 2032. The project fact sheet gives the first phase the window first quarter of 2026 to second quarter of 2027.

The Indianapolis Department of Public Works told the IBJ in August 2026 that it is targeting the end of the year. WRTV reported the end of Phase Three in August 2026 after a run from November 2025 through July 2026. Write the latest published date into the contract, which is the second quarter of 2027 on the project's own fact sheet.

What a motorcoach driver faces

The Fountain Fletcher District Association keeps a weekly project log. Its 21 August 2026 update reports the intersection closures at Shelby Street and Morris Street and at Shelby Street and Prospect Street standing. Prospect Street is closed at the Virginia Avenue and Shelby Street intersection, and a driver cannot reach Shelby Street from Prospect Street. Woodlawn Avenue was restricted to local traffic between Virginia Avenue and Shelby Street on 24 August 2026 during excavation.

IndyGo closed its Fountain Square, Pleasant Run and Raymond stations to the Red Line. The Red Line serves Route 13 stops on East and Raymond streets, including the stop at Shelby Street and Raymond Street. IndyGo split Route 90 into separate north and south segments from the downtown transit center on 14 June 2026.

No published document sets a coach staging area, a loading zone or a drop-off point for the district. Ask the project office for the current traffic management plan and the current detour map before a site visit.

The venue inventory taking bookings

The Fountain Square Theatre Building at 1105 Prospect Street holds the district's largest published event inventory. The building dates from 1928.

The Fountain Square Theatre offers columned arches around a dance floor at the foot of a stage, with a balcony above the main level. Atomic Bowl, in the basement, rents seven lanes, the cafe seating and buffet area for a private event with exclusive use of the facility. Action Bowl holds eight duckpin lanes and seats 110 guests. The Imbibe lobby bar and game room opens at 11 a.m. seven days a week. The Rooftop Garden opens at 6 p.m. daily, weather permitting, and runs until 1 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.

The venue's events line is 317.686.6010. The Fountainview Inn reservations line is 317.686.6018. The venue's own calendar lists ten dated entries through 5 January 2027, including Swing Night in the theatre and a Two Step Tuesday series in Atomic Bowl.

Site visits and inspections

The project office sits at 901 Shelby Street, Room B204, Indianapolis, IN 46203, and opens by appointment only. The project line is (317) 981-2515 and the address is FSdrainage@gmail.com.

Bring the walking route into the site inspection. The Fountainview Inn, an eleven-room boutique hotel, sits inside the Fountain Square Theatre Building. It stands 341 metres from the Fountain Square neighbourhood point in OpenStreetMap and 2,452 metres from the Indiana Convention Center on straight-line measurements from OpenStreetMap coordinates.

Off-site event plans in the district

Fountain Square keeps programming through the construction. The IBJ reported that the Chreece hip-hop festival was set to bring crowds to eight Fountain Square venues on one Saturday in August 2026, and that the Epicurean Indy festival uses the intersection of Virginia and Woodlawn avenues.

Residents set up a DJ booth inside the construction zone around the Lady Spray fountain at the intersection of Virginia Avenue, Prospect Street and Shelby Street earlier in 2026. Craig Von Deylen, owner of the Murphy Arts Center at 1043 Virginia Avenue, described the gathering to the IBJ.

Midwest Living named Garfield Park the city's coolest neighbourhood that people have yet to discover in May 2026.

Timing contracts and inspections

A block booked for 2027 sits inside the first phase window on the fact sheet and inside the 24 weeks of Virginia Avenue and Fletcher Avenue bridge work that INDOT scheduled for 2027. The Indianapolis Cultural Trail remains accessible, with a short segment closed and a pedestrian detour across the bridge, and the IBJ reported the Fletcher Avenue bridge closed for 12 weeks.

Put the detour plan in the site inspection. Ask the project office for the phase schedule in writing.
