Potrero Yard: Group Access and Loading on 17th Street to 2030

The Potrero Yard rebuild occupies the block bounded by Mariposa, Bryant, 17th and Hampshire streets through 2030. SFMTA publishes no coach loading plan for the corridor, so group programmes plan around lane shifts, marked work zones and the removal of on-site parking.

The Potrero Yard rebuild occupies the superblock bounded by Mariposa, Bryant, 17th and Hampshire streets. Construction has begun and runs through 2030, the project page states. A group programme that uses the 17th Street corridor plans against a work zone that lasts four years.

Phase timing

The project page publishes three windows. Design and permitting run across 2022 to 2026. Construction runs across 2026 to 2030. Operations start in 2030. Site preparation begins later this year, ahead of demolition expected to start in early 2027.

Potrero Yard is the first facility scheduled under the Building Progress Program, a $2.3 billion effort the agency launched in 2017. The program covers Muni facility modernization and the move to an all-electric fleet.

City permit data follows the same sequence. A demolition permit filed on 8 September 2026, number 202608196855, covers a two-story auto repair building at the site with an estimated cost of $4.5 million. The city issued an asbestos removal permit tied to that demolition on 7 October 2026 at a $100,000 estimate. The new-construction permit for the four-story bus facility, number 202411084679, was filed on 8 November 2024 and sits in filed status.

Loading and set-down

The project page publishes no coach loading, set-down or staging plan for 17th Street. It publishes the street condition during construction: temporary lane shifts around the site, work zones marked and sectioned by signage and cones, and temporary parking restrictions inside active work zones.

The finished streetscape adds a protected bikeway on 17th Street, high-visibility crosswalks and updated landscaping. Each element changes curb geometry on the block a coach would use.

Retail, vendor pitches and restrooms

The finished site adds two retail spaces. The project page targets community-based retailers and organizations for them, and lists additional spaces for street vendors on 17th Street. New public restrooms sit near Franklin Square.

The design places the proposed housing along Bryant Street, next to the bus facility.

No residential or public parking

The project page states there will be no residential or public parking on site. The agency cites the site's position in a prominent transit zone. The record carries no on-site coach or vehicle staging.

Groups plan set-down and staging against the temporary parking restrictions the work zones carry.

Transit the corridor keeps

Potrero Yard stores and maintains six Muni routes: the 5 Fulton, 5R Fulton Rapid, 14 Mission, 22 Fillmore, 30 Stockton and 49 Van Ness/Mission. The agency states that all six serve Muni Service Equity neighborhoods. Trolley buses powered at the yard carry about 97,500 bus riders each weekday, the project page states.

The new facility holds up to 246 electric trolley buses, a 68 percent increase from 146. The agency published both figures in its March 2026 approval notice. Trolley buses charged at the yard run on Hetch Hetchy hydropower.

Contacts and the next update

Webcor, the construction contractor, gives a virtual community construction update on Wednesday, 21 October at 5:30 p.m. The session covers construction detail and the current and coming phases of work.

Construction questions go to PotreroYard@plenaryamericas.com. Noise complaints go to 415-234-8190 or PotreroYardSF@webcor.com. Procurement and job questions go to outreach@webcor.com. The record carries no venue-specific access contact.

Housing and the approval record

The agency proposes approximately 100 affordable units along Bryant Street. Households earning 30 to 80 percent of area median income qualify, the housing page states. The SFMTA Board of Directors approved the project on 3 March 2026. The Board of Supervisors Budget and Finance Committee approved it on 18 March 2026. The full Board of Supervisors approved it on 24 March 2026.

The housing page ties the unit count to funding availability.
