Medical Education Building Gives Indianapolis Planners a 16th Street Anchor

A 326,200-square-foot teaching and research building anchors the 44-acre IU Health campus. Group sales teams get an academic audience and a dated booking window.

A Teaching and Research Building Anchors the 16th Street Campus

Indiana University School of Medicine opened its $230 million medical education and research building in June 2025. The building runs 11 stories and 326,200 gross square feet at 350 W. 14th St., west of Senate Avenue and south of the IU Neurosciences Research Center on 16th Street. IU Health contributed $145 million of the cost. The building sits inside the health system's 44-acre campus, which runs from 16th Street to 12th Street and from Capitol Avenue to Interstate 65 across about eight square blocks.

The teaching floors carry the scale a planner can sell. The ground floor holds a large atrium with space for small learning communities, classrooms, lecture halls and a cafe. The second and third floors hold more classrooms, a surgical skills center, simulation spaces, a library, practice exam rooms and an anatomy lab. Eight research floors sit above. The school calls the project its first new classroom space in Indianapolis since 1959 and the largest construction project in its 120-year history.

What Sits Around the Building

The IU Health hospital planned for the same campus consolidates Methodist and University hospitals into one 864-bed facility. Inside INdiana Business reported the opening as expected in late 2027, and the IU Health project page answers its own opening question with December 2027.

Downtown Indianapolis meeting supply already sits inside walking range of the corridor. Visit Indy counts 12 hotels and 5,200 rooms connected to the Indiana Convention Center, including the JW Marriott Indianapolis at 1,005 rooms and 104,482 square feet of meeting space and the Signia by Hilton Indianapolis at 803 rooms and 235,000 square feet with a 50,000-square-foot ballroom. Visit Indy states that the wider downtown pipeline brings the total within walking distance of the convention center above 10,000 rooms.

The venue's own numbers set the booking frame. The Indiana Convention Center & Lucas Oil Stadium facility guide counts 11 exhibit halls with 566,600 contiguous square feet, 71 meeting rooms at 113,302 square feet, three ballrooms at 62,173 square feet, 49 docks, 4,721 hotel rooms connected by skywalk, 7,175 rooms within a six-block radius and 4,570 committable group rooms downtown.

The Academic and Medical Group Base

The school's fact sheet gives a group sales team its audience. It counts 1,459 medical students statewide, 802 of them in Indianapolis, 1,448 residents and fellows across 121 accredited programmes, 3,707 full-time faculty and 3,056 volunteer faculty. The same sheet records 7,822 applications and 365 enrolled students for the Class of 2029, $548 million in grants awarded in 2025 and $233 million in National Institutes of Health funding.

Those numbers name the business. Medical society meetings, continuing education, faculty recruitment, admissions work and association programmes follow a research institution, and the school operates nine campuses statewide.

RFP Timing for Campus-Linked Programmes

Two published calendars bracket the booking window. The academic year starts in early August, when classes began on August 4, 2025. The hospital opens in late 2027 on Inside INdiana Business's reading and December 2027 on the IU Health project page.

Programmes tied to the campus sit inside those dates, so a planner books against the school year. The venue publishes its own deadline. The Indiana Convention Center facility guide includes the initial room setup with room rental when event specifications reach the Event Coordinator at least 25 days before the first move-in day, within 72 hours of contract execution for events booked inside 60 days. Specifications arriving inside the 30-day timeline may incur charges.

That deadline is the one date the venue publishes for a programme on this corridor. Ask the campus for its own calendar before quoting a date.

What to Ask the Campus

No source publishes group rate guidance or a room-night forecast for the medical campus. No source publishes a calendar of the school's own programmes. Group sales teams should put those questions to Visit Indy, IU School of Medicine and IU Health, and ask for the campus calendar before quoting a date.
